One day in autumn, I remember walking with Daisy Aldan at our second meeting, after corresponding. I remember it was a wistful walk, because we were both overwhelmed with the actual work of self-publishing.

Her poems are of the finest quality, published in small magazines, and she did much for other poets and artists through Folder Editions. Yet she has to do her own publishing, and neither one of us can find a distributor who will take over the chores of disseminating books, dealing with bookshops. What we discovered is that bookshops are afraid to leave bills from big publishers unpaid, as their book supplies will be cut off, but are not afraid to ignore bills from small magazines and self-publishers. They know we have no power. The labor is overwhelming.

On that first walk Daisy and I shared our disappointments and our difficulties. We established empathy. But actually Daisy is a very spirited and cheerful young woman, who has been an actress, who studied with Anna Balakian and might have been the first woman to do a study of American surrealist writers. She teaches creative writing at the New York High School of Art and Design, where the students are exceptional and are prepared to enter the art fields. She is teaching my stories from Under a Glass Bell. She now shares the editing of Two Cities.
